LABORATORY OF HUMAN ORGANOGENESIS

Principal Investigator
Edwin leads the Laboratory of Human Organogenesis, where the team engineers human stem cell–based and quantitative models of organ development. His work connects developmental biology, tissue engineering and systems biology to build predictive models of human disease. He obtained his doctoral degree in Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology from Harvard Medical School, under the mentoring of Dr. Douglas Melton, after completing his bachelor’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Puerto Rico. During his graduate training, he developed methods to generate virtually unlimited quantities of functional insulin-producing beta cells from human pluripotent stem cells in vitro, an approach that is currently being tested in clinical trials as a potential cell replacement therapy for diabetic patients. As a postdoctoral scholar, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Ali Brivanlou at the Rockefeller University, where he developed a platform to generate human mini-lungs at a high-throughput scale. As a founding member and former Vice President at RumiViro, he spearheaded pioneering scientific initiatives dedicated to uncovering and advancing groundbreaking therapeutics targeting respiratory viruses and chronic kidney diseases.

Graduate student
Eleni graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Vassar College in 2017. She was a Research Assistant in the Laboratory of Synthetic Embryology at Rockefeller University for over two years before transitioning to her current role at NYU. Her interests include caring for neighborhood stray cats, exploring the city, and cooking.

Postdoctoral Fellow
Javier, originally from Lima, Peru, earned his B.Sc. in biology from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. During his Ph.D. in Cori Bargmann’s lab at The Rockefeller University, he studied the gut-brain axis and how neuropeptide signaling regulates sickness behavior in C. elegans, uncovering fundamental mechanisms of neural-immune interactions.

Graduate student
Aditi graduated from SUNY Albany in 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at NYU Tandon. In the Rosado-Olivieri Lab, she contributes to research involving the optimization of hydrogel micropatterning and cell culture protocols to develop models to study human gut development. After her master’s, she plans to attend law school and pursue a career in patent law. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, hiking, concerts and exploring new coffee shops around the city.

Undergraduate student
Swaha is an undergraduate at NYU studying Biology with minors in Business and Chemistry. She works in the Rosado-Olivieri Lab, where her interests span developmental and stem cell biology and the computational, quantitative imaging approaches used to study them. Outside the lab, she loves painting and exploring New York City's museums.

B.Sc./M.Sc. student
A native New Yorker, Rakiba is enrolled into the BS/MS track at NYU Tandon's School of Engineering. Having just completed her Bachelor's in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and continuing on with her education via her Master's in Biomedical Engineering, she is passionate about the manner in which the two disciplines can intersect in order to allow for the modeling and treatment of congenital diseases with the lab's organoids. During her time at the lab, she has made contributions to both the optimization of the mini-intestines platform and the quantification of the role played by gene misexpression in congenital tracheoesophageal disorders.

Scientist
We are always seeking ambitious and talented scientists, students, and postdocs to join our team. If you share our passion for stem cell biology and bioengineering, and are interested in working with us, contact Edwin (er3400@nyu.edu) with your CV and a cover letter.
